Biography
Instant Replay covers a great mix of new and old favorites and we put our own twist on the songs. The band has been together for over ten years. We maintain the original flavor or essence of the tunes but present them with our own personal touch. We play songs that people recognize, but that often don’t receive much radio play any more. We put a snappy spin on the songs the Instant Replay way. The band consists of six members:
Carol Cain:
I’ve had a passion for singing and performing which emerged at an early age. Some of my earliest memories are of my mother as a vocalist with her ladies a Capella group. Music was always in our home. My first solo “You Light up My Life” was in the 8th grade at the Silver Lake Festival. I continued to sing as a solo artist at church and weddings through high school and college.
Marriage, raising three children and a day job as a nurse has kept me plenty busy over the years, but I have always had the desire to sing with a band. That door opened for me in 2002 when I was singing Ave Maria in church. I was invited to audition and I continue to perform with my first band, Instant Replay. Since then, I have been blessed to work with some incredible musicians who have inspired me to push myself further than I thought possible.
I found that learning to play guitar and bass was an exciting challenge and an extension of my singing. My influences range from inspirational, country, torch, and blues, but my heart belongs to rock and roll. I have performed at many diverse venues ranging from weddings, clubs, musical productions, family gatherings and am most proud of performing the National Anthem before a Cleveland Indians game.
I’ve been honored to record and perform with drummer/songwriter/producer, Joe Vitale. I’ve also been fortunate to work with studio producers, Jim Ballard and Brian Haskins. Having grown up listening to all genres of music, I must credit Linda Ronstadt, Chrissie Hynde, and Sheryl Crow as strong influences for my musical style.
I am thankful for the privilege I have been given to perform publicly. I love to watch the audience dance, sing along and tap their feet. The positive energy that the audience radiates is contagious, and that energy is reflected in our shows. I truly enjoy each performance and consider it an honor to play with such talented musicians.
Ed Boggs began playing guitar at age 15. He has been in several bands over the years since then, including an Italian Rock-and-Roll band and an Italian Folk trio in Italy. Other bands have included: “I Passeri” (The Sparrows in Italian), Ocean Rose, Timepiece, Feelin’ Alright, and Instant Replay, of which he is a “founding father.” In all of the bands, Ed played rhythm and lead guitar, did some lead vocal work, but prefers singing backup vocals. He spent a summer in Spain living with the Gypsies and learning Flamenco Guitar and was taught Bluegrass Banjo by his uncle, who played on the radio in W. Virginia with Flat and Scruggs. Key musical influences include: Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin, Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane, Eagles, Dead, Doobies, Byrds, Janice Joplin, Doors, Jose Feliciano, Santana, Ronstadt, Cars, James Gang (Joe Walsh) and Police (Sting).
Craig Wallick has been playing drums and percussion since the age of 12. As a young drummer, he was greatly influenced by his cousin and NE Ohio native, Joe Vitale who played drums with Joe Walsh, The Eagles, Crosby, Stills & Nash and many other great bands. He too is one of the “founding fathers” of Instant Replay. He plays jazz, blues, rock, and originals. Craig’s drumming influences were Joe Vitale, Peter Erskine, Russ Kunkel, Kenny Aronoff, Taylor Hawkins and the late great John Bonham. He has played drums for over 40 years with The Free Sample Band, The Pets, The Sidewalks and Instant Replay. He has played with fellow band members Jimmy Phillips and Scott Loutzenheiser for over 35 years. He has played with Ed Boggs for nearly 20 years and with Carol Cain for the last 13. “Carol was such a positive change for our band and our musical style adding Sheryl Crow, Linda Ronstadt & Chrissie Hynde. I am very happy with our sound and style and I enjoy watching the crowd dance to the beat we lay down.”
Jim Phillips: “Jimmy” as his friends and fellow musos know him, began playing bass as a side instrument in high school. He was originally trained in trumpet, and stands among alumni of The North Canton Hoover High School music programs, The Kent Stark Jazz Ensemble, The Akron Jazz Workshop under Roland Palucci, as well as The Canton Police Boys Club Drum and Bugle Corps, The Blue Coats.
Jimmy transitioned to bass full time in his early 20’s, playing with several Akron area bands in the 80’s and 90’s including The Chauffeurs, The Sidewalks and Taboo Rhythm. From the 90’s to present, he has played electric and upright bass with the Walk Ons, a North Canton based acoustic band, and the Louisville, Ohio based rock band Throttle. Over the last three decades, he has had the pleasure of playing in groups with both Craig Wallick and Scott Lautzenheiser. Bass influences include John Entwistle, Jack Bruce, John Paul Jones, Kenny Passerelli, Fernando Saunders, Jimmy Johnson, Chris Squire, Geddy Lee, Francis Rocco Prestia, Ray Brown and Charlie Haden. Let it also be said that the drummers that played with all of his bass influences had just as much impact on Jimmy’s development as a bassist. Keith Moon, John Bonham, Bill Bruford, Joe Vitale, Max Roach, Louis Bellson, Buddy Rich, Peter Erskine and Jerry Gaskil have all been major influences. Drums and bass are the heartbeat of any great band, and Jimmy is beyond thrilled to be part of that with Instant Replay!
Tim Akin:
Tim has been playing many years and with many different bands. The Legends Band, The Decendants, Sounds of the 70’s , Mean old World, Moustache Yourself, Ragin Kane, The Reunion Band, Akin for Jazz, Favorite Mistake, and The Hot Potatoes. He enjoys playing many types of music including Blues , Jazz , Rock , Pop , Latin and Country. He has studied at the University of Akron and with many great teachers.
Kurt Reed:
Kurt is the newest member of the band joining in 2018 adding lead guitar, bass and vocals to Instant Replay. Kurt is the Owner and Director of the Fairlawn and Hudson Schools of Music. He began his journey into music at the age of 9, taking private guitar lessons at the Cleveland Institute of Music. He then began taking lessons privately with Stephen Aron at Oberlin College. When the time came to choose a college, Reed decided to continue his studies with Aron at the University of Akron. Reed is a proud graduate of the Guzzetta School of Music, having earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Classical Guitar Performance. In 2007 Kurt opened his first school of music,Jam Session, which focused on the creation of a rock program. His students have been in the finals of the Tri-C High School Rock-Off nearly every year since he began his rock program, some students even winning the entire competition. He also opened Fairlawn School of Music in 2011 and rebranded Jam Session in 2012 into the Hudson School of Music. His schools offer a private lesson experience that is supportive and unique, encouraging students at all levels to perform. Reed also uses his businesses to support the greater community. In between the opening of his two schools, Reed was also the guitar instructor at Archbishop Hoban High School from 2009-2011. Kurt was recognized by the Akron Area Arts Alliance as the Outstanding Artist in Music at the Arts Alive! Awards in 2013 for his contributions to the community and to the local music scene. Kurt is also a member of Colorvine and Lithium bands and has been a member of Verve Daddy, Rusted Development, Favorite Mistake and Triple Threat. When he is not performing on his own, Reed is out supporting the many projects of his faculty from the Fairlawn and Hudson Schools of Music.
Past Members
Scott Loutzenheiser started playing guitar at the age of 12. Early influences were Donovan, Tommy Roe, Tommy James, and most of the British-invasion bands. Being in bands with his high school friends, he played many styles of music from rhythm and blues with a horn section, to punk rock and everything in between. In 1979 he met drummer Craig Wallick. The Pets were formed shortly after. The power pop band played for about two years in northeast Ohio area clubs. Scott and Craig remained friends, and 30 years later are together again. Scott said, “I am very excited to be a part of Instant Replay.”
John Ozzie Oswald aka Johnny O, bassist/ vocalist also has a Frank Sinatra tribute act as Franky James. He plays multiple instruments, guitar, piano, harmonica and had composed over 200 songs. Ozzie’s influences range from The Beatles, B.B. King, Todd Rudrgen, to Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughn. He also enjoys WORLD music, especially those with Latin expression.
Mike Fallucco started playing Bass in 1983. He joined his first band in 1984 called “American Classic”. The band consisted of Mike’s one cousin who played drums, and two other cousins who played lead and rhythm guitar. They played 50’s, 60’s and 70’s music, since this is what the bars were looking to hire. American Classic remained together until around 1999. Mike states I bounced around with other projects until I was lucky enough to find just the right group of performers: Instant Replay. Mike’s influences revolve around the Beatles, CCR, Chuck Berry, Elvis and Lynyrd Skynyrd. These influences have not changed much during the years, and this is a good thing.
Rob McCarty studied guitar for several years under George Bachmann, now professor of classical guitar at the Hugh A. Glauser School of Music, Kent State University. He formed his first Rock-and-Roll band in grade school, played guitar for his high school stage band, and returned to Rock-and-Roll bands in college. He also performed Irish music with Irene Uhalley and the Irishmen for five years. Rob helped to form Instant Replay from the pieces of an earlier band. Rob considers the Beatles, Gram Parsons, the Everly Brothers, the Beach Boys, Devo, the Pretenders, and the Byrds as his most influential musicians.
